Dr Jonathan King grew up in South Africa, and graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1982. Continuing at Cape Town University he studied the effects of an exercise programme on children with exercise-induced asthma, leading to a Masters degree in Sport Science (MSc awarded in 1986).
Dr King cycle toured in the United Kingdom and Western Europe before working in the Childrens wards in Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands) in 1988. In 1989 he secured a Paediatric Registrar position at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand. The job included working in Neonatal Intensive Care and Air Ambulance retrievals of premature babies on the North Island. Further study in this specialty led to attaining the Diploma of Child Health from the University of Otago in 1989.
In 1990 Dr King moved to Australia where he worked as a Medical Officer at Gosford Hospital. In 1992 he joined the Family Medicine Programme and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1993.
After working as a rural General Practitioner in Grafton, New South Wales (NSW), Australia in 1993, Dr King returned to the Central Coast of NSW. He concentrated on his Sports Medicine career, leading to being awarded the Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians in 1996.
Dr King has been working in the field of Sports Medicine since 1994 and currently is in private practice in East Gosford, NSW. He has associations with a number of businesses in the area, and cares for injured workers. Since specialising in Sports Medicine Dr King has been providing care for people who have been injured in various settings, whether on the sporting field, at work, or at home.
Dr King also works as an Injury Management Consultant for Workcover NSW and Medicolegal Consultant for various organisations.
